Sinkhole Disrupts Operations at New York’s LaGuardia Airport
According to reports, the issue was detected near Runway 4/22 during a morning airfield check conducted by the Port Authority of New York at around 11 a.m. local time (15:59 GMT).
Airport officials said the runway was immediately closed after the discovery, and emergency engineering teams were deployed to assess the damage and begin repair work.
“The runway was immediately shut down, and emergency construction and engineering crews are onsite to determine the cause and complete necessary repairs as quickly and safely as possible,” the airport said.
Authorities warned that passengers should expect disruptions while operations are adjusted, including potential delays and cancellations. The situation was further complicated by forecasts of thunderstorms later in the day.
“Travelers should expect delays and cancellations, particularly with forecast thunderstorms expected later today, and are strongly encouraged to check directly with their airlines for the latest flight status information,” it said.
