US Restricts Visas for S. Sudan Officials Over Peace Process Concerns
(MENAFN) The United States announced on Tuesday that it is introducing visa restrictions on members of South Sudan’s transitional government, accusing them of actions that have undermined peace efforts and obstructed a key ceasefire agreement.
According to a statement attributed to State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott, the officials targeted are accused of “undermining peace in South Sudan, including by impeding the ceasefire agreement and engaging in corruption that has fueled the conflict.”
The measures were imposed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and are directed at individuals linked to a long-stalled peace arrangement originally signed during the first term of President Donald Trump.
The statement further alleged that investigative findings point to corruption involving officials and entities, including Crawford Capital, Ltd., which are accused of diverting state funds and misappropriating foreign assistance intended for South Sudanese civilians.
Reaffirming Washington’s position, the statement said the United States remains committed to supporting the South Sudanese population, adding: “The United States will continue to stand with the South Sudanese people, who want to live in peace and dignity.”
