US Senator Pushes Constitutional Move to End Automatic Birthright Citizenship
In statements shared on social media, Paul said, “I introduced a constitutional amendment to end birthright citizenship,” adding, “The 14th Amendment was never meant to reward illegal entry.”
He argued that legal immigration has historically contributed positively to the country’s development, while claiming that undocumented immigration is being used to access citizenship benefits. He stated, “Legal immigration built this country. Illegal immigration is being used to game the system. Only children of legal residents should receive automatic citizenship.”
The proposal aligns with earlier efforts by President Donald Trump to restrict birthright citizenship through executive action shortly after taking office last year. That order sought to limit citizenship for children born on US soil to undocumented mothers, but it immediately faced legal opposition from civil rights organizations and several states.
The issue is rooted in the 14th Amendment of the US Constitution, ratified in 1868 after the Civil War, which establishes citizenship for all individuals born or naturalized in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction.
The amendment effort reflects ongoing political debate in the United States over immigration policy and constitutional interpretation regarding citizenship rights.
