Starmer Says He Will Continue Governing Despite Growing Calls to Resign

(MENAFN) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has told his Cabinet that he intends to continue governing, despite rising internal pressure following Labour’s recent election defeat and renewed calls for his resignation.

During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Starmer attempted to reassure ministers and restore stability after what he described as a “destabilizing” period in Westminster politics.

According to a statement from Downing Street, he acknowledged responsibility for the party’s election performance while stressing that he remains focused on delivering the government’s agenda.

“As I said yesterday, I take responsibility for these election results and I take responsibility for delivering the change we promised.”

He warned that recent political instability had broader consequences, including economic effects on households and public confidence, and urged ministers to move forward with governing responsibilities.

“The past 48 hours have been destabilizing for the government, and that has a real economic cost for our country and for families. The Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered. The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a Cabinet.”

Starmer’s comments come as tensions continue to rise within Labour after its recent electoral setbacks, which have prompted criticism from party members and renewed speculation about his leadership, even as no formal challenge has been launched.
