German Business Confidence Falls to 6-Year Low

(MENAFN) German business confidence deteriorated sharply in April, falling further than analysts had forecast to its weakest reading since May 2020, as the ongoing Iran war cast a long shadow over the outlook for Europe's largest economy, fresh data released Friday revealed.

The ifo Institute reported its closely watched business climate index slid to 84.4 in April from 86.3 in March, falling short of market expectations of 85.7.

ifo President Clemens Fuest pulled no punches in his assessment: "The German economy is being hit hard by the Iran crisis."

The deterioration was broad-based. Companies' evaluation of their current conditions retreated to 85.4 from 86.7, while forward-looking expectations dropped more steeply, declining to 83.3 from 85.9.

Klaus Wohlrabe, head of surveys at the ifo Institute, painted an equally sobering picture, warning that the rot has spread throughout the economy: "The German economy is losing its confidence," he said, noting that sentiment weakened across all sectors.

Friday's figures compound an already troubling economic picture. Separate data revealed that Germany's private sector slipped into contraction in April for the first time in nearly a year, reinforcing fears that the country's fragile recovery is being derailed by energy shocks and trade disruptions stemming directly from the Middle East conflict. Germany's Economy Ministry moved earlier this week to slash its growth projections for both 2026 and 2027, simultaneously raising inflation forecasts and citing surging energy costs and flagging external demand.

The grim outlook arrives despite Berlin having greenlit a landmark €500 billion — approximately $584 billion — infrastructure investment fund last year, designed to reinvigorate the economy following an extended stretch of stagnation.
