UN Chief and Qatari Emir Discuss Rising Mideast Tensions
According to a UN statement, the two leaders emphasized the urgent need to halt the military escalation and resume dialogue for the sake of regional stability. Guterres condemned recent attacks on Qatar as violations of its sovereignty and territorial integrity and reaffirmed Qatar’s role as a strong and valued partner of the United Nations.
Earlier on Monday, Qatar reported that its air defenses had shot down two SU-24 aircraft coming from Iran and intercepted seven ballistic missiles and five drones targeting the country.
These attacks on Qatar are part of Iran’s broader response to the ongoing US-Israeli offensive, which began Saturday and killed several senior Iranian officials, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Tehran has launched strikes against multiple Gulf states hosting US military assets.
