Starmer Affirms UK Won’t Participate in US-Israeli Attacks on Iran
Starmer updated members of parliament on the situation in Iran in the House of Commons, emphasizing that the UK did not participate in the initial strikes. He described the decision as "deliberate," reflecting the government’s belief that a negotiated settlement offers the best outcome.
"We are not joining the US and Israeli offensive strikes. The basis for our decision is the collective self-defense of longstanding friends and allies and protecting British lives," he said.
Addressing criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump, Starmer added: "It is my duty to judge what is in Britain's national interest. That is what I've done, and I stand by it."
Trump reportedly said that Starmer had “taken too long” to grant the U.S. access to British bases and commented, “This is probably something that has never happened before between our countries…We are very disappointed with Keir.”
Starmer distinguished between the initial conflict and the current situation, noting: "It is clear that Iran's outrageous response has become a threat to our people, our interests and our allies, and it cannot be ignored."
He also highlighted that approximately 200,000 British citizens are in the Middle East and described the potential risks they face from Iran as “deeply concerning.”
