WhatsApp Explores Parental Supervision Tools
The tech news platform—recognized as a leading authority on WhatsApp development updates—revealed that the Meta-owned service is building functionality enabling parents to oversee linked secondary profiles.
The planned framework would permit younger individuals to establish restricted accounts where parents dictate which contacts can initiate messages or calls, according to the report. These secondary profiles would automatically default to contact-only communication modes.
"This default configuration helps reduce the risk of unsolicited contact and potentially harmful communication, as it prevents unknown users from reaching the child directly," WABetaInfo said.
Guardian oversight would extend to reviewing and modifying core privacy configurations while receiving notifications regarding account behavior or messaging patterns—crucially, without accessing actual message text or audio from calls.
"This will establish the relationship between the two profiles while preserving the privacy of messages and calls," the outlet added.
WABetaInfo reports the messaging giant is presently evaluating these supervision mechanisms in testing phases, with public availability anticipated in an upcoming software release.
The development signals WhatsApp's response to mounting pressure for platform accountability in protecting underage users from digital threats while balancing privacy concerns that have long defined the encrypted messaging service.
