Israel conducts airstrikes in southern Lebanon despite ceasefire

(MENAFN) Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, even though a ceasefire agreement has been in place since November of last year, according to reports.

The attacks targeted a valley hosting the towns of Izze and Romin, as well as the town of Jbaa and areas around Zefta and Mount Safi. Several homes in Jbaa were reportedly damaged, though Lebanese authorities have not yet confirmed whether there were any casualties.

The Israeli military stated that it struck infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese group Hezbollah in multiple locations across southern Lebanon. “As part of the strikes, the army struck a compound used by Hezbollah’s Radwan Force for conducting training and courses,” the military said in a statement.

The army argued that both the sites targeted and the activities carried out there violated agreements between Israel and Lebanon and posed a threat to Israeli security.

The ceasefire officially took effect on November 27, 2024, after hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel, which began in October 2023, escalated into a full-scale offensive in September 2024.

The conflict reportedly killed over 4,000 people and injured 17,000.

Under the terms of the ceasefire, the Israeli army was expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025. Instead, it has only partially pulled back, maintaining a military presence at five border outposts.
