Australia, Indonesia Strike Landmark Defense Deal

(MENAFN) Australia and Indonesia unveiled plans Wednesday for systematic security consultations under a landmark bilateral defense agreement announced by both nations' top officials.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto traveled to Australia for talks with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese Wednesday, finalizing negotiations on the bilateral Treaty on Common Security.

During a joint media briefing in Sydney, Albanese outlined that the pact will obligate both countries to hold regular security discussions at leadership and ministerial levels, while evaluating potential individual or combined responses to emerging threats, an Australian broadcasting agency reported.

Prabowo characterized the security arrangement as reinforcing and elevating bilateral ties between the neighboring nations.

In a communiqué issued Wednesday afternoon, Australian Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong noted the treaty draws heavily from a 1995 security maintenance accord between the two countries, representing a substantial expansion of current defense and security collaboration between Australia and Indonesia.

Both leaders anticipate formally signing the treaty in the coming year, the statement confirmed.
