Trump Commends Syrian President Al-Sharaa
Sharaa, who previously served as a jihadist commander with connections to Al-Qaeda and was once blacklisted by the US, overthrew Syria’s long-standing leader Bashar Assad in December 2024.
Since taking office, he has promised to reconstruct the war-damaged nation and safeguard its ethnic and religious minorities.
Trump spoke to reporters in the Oval Office, saying, “He is a very strong leader. He comes from a very tough place, and he’s a tough guy. I liked him. I get along with him. We want to see Syria become a country that’s very successful, and we think this leader can do it.”
On his Truth Social account, Trump also stated: “It was an Honor to spend time with Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa, the new President of Syria, where we discussed all the intricacies of PEACE in the Middle East, of which he is a major advocate.”
He continued, “Having a stable and successful Syria is very important to all countries in the Region.”
However, despite Sharaa’s assurances of creating an inclusive society, his administration has been tainted by repeated waves of sectarian attacks against Druze and Christian communities, which have drawn criticism from the US.
Just days prior to the visit, the US, alongside the UK and the UN, officially removed Sharaa from their respective terrorist designations.
On Monday, Washington also renewed the suspension of sanctions for another 180 days, signaling efforts to normalize diplomatic relations and enhance security collaboration with Syria.
