Cargo airplane crashing cause death of crew on board

(MENAFN) A Sudanese military cargo aircraft crashed late Tuesday in West Kordofan state, southern Sudan, the army confirmed.

According to a military statement, the aircraft suffered a technical malfunction in its right wing, which caused a loss of balance and sparked a fire before it went down tens of kilometers west of the army’s position in the area.

The plane was on a mission to airdrop supplies to field units stationed in the besieged city of Babanusa, where Sudanese army forces have been engaged in heavy clashes with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the statement said. All crew members aboard were killed, though the army did not specify the exact number.

Earlier Tuesday, the RSF claimed responsibility for shooting down a military aircraft after alleged attacks by army forces in the region.

In recent days, the Sudanese army has been conducting airdrops to support its units in Babanusa, which has faced repeated assaults by the RSF. The three Kordofan states — North, West, and South — have recently seen intense fighting between the army and the paramilitary group.

The RSF also captured El-Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, on Oct. 26, committing ethnic-based massacres of civilians, according to local and international organizations. Observers have warned that the takeover could further entrench the geographic partition of Sudan.

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a civil war between the army and the RSF, resulting in thousands of deaths, millions displaced, and one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises.
