Cuomo says he will try to cooperate with Trump if elected as NYC mayor
"I know President Trump. I was governor when he was president. In the first term, we worked together," Cuomo said during an interview, stressing his belief in productive engagement over political confrontation.
The independent candidate rejected the notion that Democratic city leaders should automatically oppose Republican presidents, saying, "I'm going to try cooperation."
Cuomo added that he believes Trump cares about New York and "would be open to a cooperative path that is doing good things in New York," describing it as "unfortunate" if the relationship between the city and the White House becomes solely political.
When asked about his approach to working with New York Governor Kathy Hochul, Cuomo underscored the importance of collaboration, citing the city’s vital role in driving the state’s economy.
He also dismissed Republican contender Curtis Sliwa’s qualifications, referencing Trump’s own remarks that Sliwa is not ready for "prime time" due to limited management and government experience.
According to recent polls conducted between late October and early November, Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani currently leads the race with support ranging from 41% to 47%, followed by Cuomo at 31–34%, and Sliwa trailing at 14–24%.
Election authorities report that more than 580,000 voters have already cast early ballots ahead of Tuesday’s vote.
Cuomo entered the race as an independent after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani, who could make history as the first Muslim and South Asian to serve as mayor of New York City if elected.
