Turkey’s Altay tank to use homegrown engines
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s main battle tank, the Altay, will soon be powered entirely by a domestically developed engine, removing reliance on foreign technology. Testing and development of the homegrown power pack have started, following last month’s production of tanks using a South Korean-sourced engine.
The initial plan is to produce 85 Altay tanks with the Korean power pack before switching to the locally made alternative. BMC Power, a Turkish firm, is manufacturing engines with capacities ranging from 400 and 600 horsepower to 1,000 and 1,500 horsepower. At its new facility in Ankara, the company will also produce transmissions for the Altay, the Fırtına self-propelled howitzer, and other next-generation armored and naval platforms.
The South Korean engines will remain in use until 2028, while the domestic BATU Power Group is expected to reach full maturity by the end of next year. The Altay equipped with the homegrown BATU engine is slated to be ready by year-end.
