Head of IAEA verifies his bid for UN secretary-general position

(MENAFN) Rafael Mariano Grossi, director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), confirmed on Wednesday that he will run for the post of UN secretary-general, slated for 2026.

"I will be a candidate for the position of Secretary General. It's not a secret, and I think it shouldn't be," Grossi told reporters during a news conference at UN headquarters in New York.

Addressing concerns about potential conflicts with his current responsibilities, Grossi emphasized that his IAEA role would remain unaffected and said he is open to discussing such issues "with anybody." He added, "What I do at the head of the IAEA speaks more than words and visions and promises and ideas that I could have as to how good a secretary-general could be."
