Sameer Suleman Takes Helm as Speaker of Malawi’s National Assembly
Suleman, who was officially nominated by DPP leader and President Peter Mutharika, secured the position with 134 votes, defeating his rival Peter Dimba of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), who received 85 votes.
The National Assembly comprises 229 seats; however, several remain unfilled as elections in certain constituencies were suspended due to irregularities, leaving a portion of the legislative body temporarily incomplete.
Following his election, Suleman has taken the official oath of office and is set to serve a five-year term. His leadership is expected to guide parliamentary proceedings amid ongoing political debates and challenges.
