Washington, Moscow are serious on nuclear deterrence—Trump

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has responded to Russia’s recent test of its nuclear-powered Burevestnik cruise missile, emphasizing that Washington and Moscow are “not playing games” with nuclear deterrence.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Monday, Trump rejected the idea that the Russian test was mere saber-rattling. “They are not playing games with us. We are not playing games with them either. We test missiles all the time,” he said.

The Russian Defense Ministry had announced on Sunday that the Burevestnik—a nuclear-powered cruise missile with virtually unlimited range—successfully completed a key flight test.

The test report was delivered to President Vladimir Putin by Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov.

Trump also noted the deployment of two US nuclear submarines closer to Russian waters and dismissed the significance of the missile’s reported 8,000-mile flight. He added that Russia should focus on ending the war in Ukraine rather than testing weapons. “A war that should have taken one week is now in its soon fourth year. That’s what [Putin] ought to do instead of testing missiles,” he said.

The Burevestnik system, powered by a miniature nuclear reactor, is intended to remain airborne for extended periods—potentially months—and strike from unpredictable directions.

Russian officials say it will enhance the country’s strategic deterrent, with the latest trial testing its ability to evade interception. Unlike traditional intercontinental ballistic missiles, the Burevestnik is reportedly smaller and less expensive.
