Surge in Emigration from Israel Hits Record Highs
Meanwhile, only a small fraction of those who left have returned, as reported by a newspaper on Monday.
The article cited a special Knesset report that highlighted that the majority of emigrants are educated young adults between the ages of 20 and 39.
This group includes individuals who had previously immigrated to Israel but left shortly after.
The findings were published by the Knesset Research and Information Center ahead of a session by the parliamentary Committee for Immigration and Absorption, which is set to convene on Monday to address the rising emigration trend.
The report "presents a troubling picture of Israel’s emigration patterns," according to the newspaper. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, referenced in the report, showed that an average of about 36,000 Israelis left the country each year between 2009 and 2021.
However, the figures took a sharp upward turn in 2022, when 55,000 Israelis emigrated, marking a 46% increase from the previous year.
The trend continued into 2023, with approximately 82,700 Israelis leaving, reflecting another 50% rise.
In contrast, the number of Israelis returning after long stays abroad remained low, averaging around 24,000 annually.
Additionally, about 40% of those who left and 38% of those who returned in 2022 were between the ages of 20 and 39, a proportion that is higher than their representation in the general population, which stands at 27%.
