China’s CR450 Bullet Train Sets New Speed Records
The CR450, engineered for a peak test speed of 450 km/h (roughly 280 mph) and a commercial service speed of 400 km/h (almost 248 mph), is undergoing qualification tests on the high-speed corridor connecting Shanghai in the east to Chengdu in the west.
In terms of performance, the CR450 can accelerate from zero to 350 km/h (around 217 mph) in just 4 minutes and 40 seconds.
In a remarkable achievement, two CR450 trains recently broke a record by passing one another at a combined speed of 896 km/h.
This accomplishment showcases the impressive capabilities of the new train model.
The CR450 has also undergone design improvements compared to its predecessor, the CR400.
It now features a more streamlined shape with a longer nose, a roofline that is 20 centimeters lower, and a reduction in weight by 50 tons, leading to a 22% decrease in aerodynamic drag. Currently, the CR400 Fuxing trains operate at a top speed of 350 km/h.
Before entering passenger service, the CR450 is scheduled to complete 600,000 kilometers (about 373,000 miles) of trial runs without any issues.
