Marco Rubio Promises to Deport Informants to El Salvador
(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly promised to send informants, who had been protected by the US government, back to El Salvador in return for access to one of the country’s most infamous prisons.
According to a report by a media outlet, Rubio made this offer during a phone call on March 13 with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele.
The proposed agreement would allow the Trump administration to use El Salvador's Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT) to hold deported migrants.
Citing both current and former officials from the US and El Salvador, the newspaper noted that President Bukele requested the return of nine imprisoned MS-13 gang leaders, including several "informants" under US protection, in exchange for granting the US access to the prison.
Rubio allegedly assured Bukele that US Attorney General Pam Bondi would terminate the Justice Department’s protection arrangements with these informants, enabling their deportation.
According to officials cited by the media outlet, this agreement risked undoing years of collaboration between US investigators and gang members, whose cooperation was crucial for federal investigations.
The proposed deal was described as a significant betrayal of US law enforcement by Douglas Farah, a contractor who worked alongside federal agents in investigating MS-13.
Farah stated, “The deal is a deep betrayal of US law enforcement, whose agents risked their lives to apprehend the gang members.”
State Department Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott defended Rubio’s actions, claiming that his diplomatic efforts had successfully led to the deportation of hundreds of gang members, thereby enhancing the safety of Americans.
However, the media outlet reported that the government of El Salvador did not respond to inquiries for comment.
