UN Investigation Reveals Israel Perpetrated Genocide in Gaza
(MENAFN) A groundbreaking report released Tuesday by the UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, has accused Israel of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
The commission called on Israel and the international community to uphold their legal duties under international law by taking immediate action to "end the genocide and punish those responsible for it."
Following a comprehensive two-year investigation into events since October 7, 2023, the commission determined that Israeli authorities and security forces engaged in four out of the five genocidal acts as defined by the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. These acts include killing, inflicting serious physical or psychological harm, deliberately creating living conditions designed to partially or wholly destroy the Palestinian population, and enforcing policies aimed at preventing births.
The report highlights explicit declarations from Israeli civilian and military officials, alongside the consistent behavior of Israeli security forces, pointing to a deliberate intent to annihilate Palestinians in Gaza "in whole or in part."
Navi Pillay, chair of the fact-finding mission, stated, "The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza," adding, "It is clear that there is an intent to destroy the Palestinians in Gaza through acts that meet the criteria set forth in the Genocide Convention."
Pillay emphasized that the blame for these atrocity crimes lies with "Israeli authorities at the highest echelons who have orchestrated a genocidal campaign for almost two years now with the specific intent to destroy the Palestinian group in Gaza."
